Environmental Toxins & the Gastrointestinal System

Objectives:

  1. Review how the microbiome affects the exposome

Synopsis:
When thinking about the impact of environmental toxins, we must also consider how our body responds to exposures. The gastrointestinal tract in on the front line of environmental exposures and can impact the amount and form of toxic exposures that enters the body. In this talk, we will review the role of the microbiome, intestinal permeability, and transit time on the exosome. We will also review treatments targeted on the gastrointestinal system that may help reduce the chronic body burden of environmental toxins.


Radioactive Elements & Heavy Metals: Impact on Health

Synopsis:
The prevalence of heavy metals and exposure to radioactive elements is increasing in many places, while the awareness and recognition of the ill effects on health is decreasing. As the potential for toxic exposures increases in the environment, food, and water, health practitioners should be aware of how to assess and treat. Toxicity and ill effects of metals and radioactive elements are not usually taught in basic medical and nursing education; therefore, it is imperative that practitioners have some basic understanding of assessment and treatment.


Toxic Hepatitis; Is A Low Sex Drive a Toxic Effect?

Synopsis:
On one side of the equation there are more than 900 drugs, toxins and herbs reported to cause liver injury. On the other side is the one patient who is just hoping to have better sex. Can we inspire patients to care about their liver before they get into trouble with serious disease? If what patients really care about is having better quality of life, it is likely that we can help them steer clear of toxic effects.


The Therapeutic Use of Optimal Stress to Provoke Recovery

  2. Explain the relationship between “challenge” and “defensive reaction” on the one hand and “support” and “adaptive response” on the other

Synopsis:
Long intrigued by the idea that superimposing an acute injury on top of a chronic one is often exactly what the body needs in order to heal, I have come to appreciate that, so too with respect to the mind, the therapeutic provision of “optimal stress” – against the backdrop of an empathically attuned and authentically engaged therapy relationship – is sometimes the magic ingredient needed to overcome the inherent resistance to change so frequently manifested by patients with longstanding emotional injuries and scars.  Behind this “no pain / no gain” approach is my firm belief in the underlying resilience that patients will inevitably discover within themselves once they are prompted to tap into their inborn ability to self-correct in the face of optimal stress – an innate capacity that will enable them ultimately to advance from cursing the darkness (a less-evolved defensive reaction) to lighting a candle (a more-evolved adaptive response).


The Health Hazards of Fracking and How to Protect Ourselves, Our Families, and Our Patients from Environmental Toxicity

Synopsis:
We will review the fundamentals of fracking, including natural gas well and pipeline safety engineering problems, biological toxicity of fracking chemicals, environmental impacts on air, land and water quality, occupational health and safety hazards, the broad range of pollution, seismic activity, threats to agriculture and animal husbandry, climate change, as well as the economic, social, political, and public health aspects of fracking.  Finally, we will discuss effective detoxification methods, and protective, nutritional therapy.


Inflammation and Depression: When the Domain of Pain Is the Brain

Objectives:

  1. Provide an explanation for why acute stress can “provoke” growth but chronic stress will “promote” disease
  2. Elaborate upon the relationship between endocrine and immune dysregulation on the one hand and depression on the other
  3. Describe a novel treatment approach for hard-to-treat depression  


Synopsis:
Researchers have found that there is an association between chronic stress and chronic inflammation and that particularly at risk for the development of depression will be those (1) who have developed a hypersensitivity to stress by virtue of early-life adversities and other sensitizing stressors and (2) for whom their mind is the target organ. I will be proposing a unified interdisciplinary theory of depression – one that conceives of depression as a stress-induced dysregulated state of mind usually accompanied, at least secondarily, by stress-induced dysregulation in all the body’s regulatory systems.  More specifically, my integrative theory takes into consideration a multitude of factors, including psychosocial stressors, irreversible genetic factors, reversible epigenetic factors, a dysregulated nervous system, a dysregulated endocrine system, and a dysregulated immune system. Recognizing the association between chronic inflammation and depression offers new opportunities for the treatment of depression by specifically targeting the inflammation – with natural (neuroprotective) anti-inflammatory agents.


Toxic Load: Interplay of Man-made & Bio-Toxins, EMF, Lymph, Genes & Emotions

Synopsis:
Many doctors understand that there is an environmental contribution to ill health from man-made toxins & even bio-toxins, but very few doctors understand the contribution to ill health from electromagnetic field radiations or lymphatic congestion or genetic SNiPs.  And even fewer doctors understand the complex relationships between specific emotions and ill health.  But almost no doctors, integrative or allopathic, understand the intricate interplay between all these previously-named contributors to ill health.  In his presentation, Dr. Cowden will describe his personal experience in practice, showing the relationships between these various factors that contribute to the toxic load in a chronically-ill patient and provide examples of his success in resolving chronic ill health in his patients by addressing the “Interplay of Man-made & Bio-Toxins, EMF, Lymph, Genes & Emotions”. 


Neurologic & Neurophyschiatric Evaluation of Concussion & Mycotoxin Brain Injuries and the Role of Acetyl-Glutathione, Resveratrol and Nitric Oxide Su

Synopsis:
We look at concussions within the context of MVA/Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation and sprts (including NFL players).  This includes discussion of the brain injury phenomenology, the neuropathophsiology and the clinical neurologic and neuropsychiatric features.  A similar overview will be reviewed for mold and mycotoxin exposure/sensitivity and cliniconeuropathophysiologic details.  Clinical syndromal features defined in “classical” Psychiatry and Neurology will be discussed as well as looking at the Integrative Medicine interfaces.  Diagnostic cas examples from Dr. Empting’s practice will be shown with therapeutic strategies discussed.  Treatment interventions will be laid out and will include current general medical standards of care and then also go through the particular utility of supplement treatment including Acetyl-Glutathione, Resveratrol and Nitric Oxide generators.  Some time will also be taken to review Quantitative EEG Neurobiofeedback and Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments.

Synopsis:
In this presentation, we will be discussing what mold is, how it grows, how to prevent its growth, and how to properly characterize indoor environments for mold. Our primary focus will be assessing indoor environments to determine if significant biological contamination exists, which could adversely affect the health of occupants.


Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Salvation for a Hungry World vs the Plague of Our Time

Objectives:

  1. Review the current history of GMO's and their developments.
  2. Review the scientific literature on the hazards and dangers of GMO’s .
  3. Outline a plan for detoxification and lifestyle changes to improve our health with the threat of a GMO’s.


Synopsis:
We have are caught between conflicting groups on the use of genetic modified organisms in our food supply.  The pro group will insist that GM foods are safe because there is no evidence to suggest otherwise, and no need to look for it, because GM foods are substantially equivalent to natural food.  The anti group insists there has been no systematic testing of GM crops or foods, so we cannot be sure whether GM products are safe to eat or not.  We will look at the current literature on testing and potential hazards that GM foods pose which are now known.  We will also recommend detoxification and lifestyle modifications to improve our health during these unsettling times.


Glyphosate (Roundup): Toxin Within Our Food

Synopsis:
We will review the overall history of glyphosate the active ingredient of roundup and its effects on the human body.  We will also look at the inactive ingredients of Roundup and their potential toxicity in the human body.  We will review a plan to help remove the toxicity from the human body and make lifestyle changes consistent with improved health.

Synopsis:
Evaluation of the Environment & Environmentally-ill Patients: Outdoor and indoor air pollution is described predominantly with carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, ozone, and sulfur dioxide where pesticides, herbicides, indoor pesticides, natural gas, and formaldehyde are the main offenders along with petroleum, alcohol, sewer gas, and outgassing from carpets and paints.  Particulates can be a problem as can terpenes.

Synopsis:

Therapy for the Environmentally-ill Patient: Treatment is avoidance of pesticides, natural gas, and formaldehyde as well as shedding particulates and 80,000 other chemicals are to be avoided.  Sauna and nutrition can be used to help depurate the toxins.  Immune boosters like gammaglobulin can help remove immune deficiency.  Intradermal neutralization can be used to treat pollens, dust and mold as well as foods and some chemicals.
